North Herts College celebrate new allotment thanks to community funding
16th May 2022
It was an absolute joy meeting the staff, students and project coordinators of the Stevenage Community Allotment at the Stevenage campus of North Herts College on 16th May. Having worked so hard to gain funding from a range of community grants, including funding given by Stevenage Community Trust, they have worked so hard to established a wonderful allotment that is packed full of healthy vegetables and fruit.
The allotment was created to allow the NHC team to train volunteer college students in gardening, growing food and also running sessions for local primary school children. The students have also designed and help build the entire allotment and have grown all of the produce themselves from seed. They have raised beds, special access beds for wheelchair users and a new polytunnel, and have been able to harvest produce and take some home to their families to cook.
The college students and NHC allotment team are now planning to help more local primary schools access learning at the college allotment, and help them to develop their own allotments.
Also present at the celebration event was Stevenage Mayor, Sandra Barr and Leader of the Council, Sharon Taylor.
Our Grants Manager Samantha Bush is pictured with the project manager Paul Dee and some of the green-fingered students. Well done to all of the NHC team.
